Although some quality classic grape wine can be found, Newfoundland and Prince Edward Island wineries
specialize in fruit wines.
Rhubarb, blueberry, partridgeberry, strawberry, plum and other fruits
are the basis of the wine industry on in Canada's pristine islands hugging the East Coast.
If your idea of berry wines is overpowering
sweetness, you'll be very surprised by the dry and complex fruit and berry wines grown and produced in this northern
area.
A favorite, worth a trip to the Rock to sample,
is Barren's Blend Wine from the Rodrigues Winery the Bronze Medal Award Winner from the
first annual Fruit Wines of Canada Competition in 2000.
