At
right, feast your eyes on the first ever winery in Delaware, the Nassau Valley Vineyards located in
Lewes, Delaware.
Winemaking was rarely (if ever) attempted in Delaware until owner
Peggy Raley defied the critics by opening her farm winery in 1987.
Today,
local wine is grown, fermented and bottled in one location
- and winning international awards in the process. Since those pioneering days, three more wineries have opened along the coast, with a promise of more entrepreneurs in the future who will claim a stake in Delaware's growing interest in the grape.
Wine varieties produced in Delaware range from Chardonnay to Merlot and, in a strange twist also include wines made from the Delaware grape (which, contrary to popular belief, was actually first propagated in Delaware, Ohio in 1849.)
