It's fun and easy. Just visit your local supermarket and look for pre-made pizza dough, along with pizza or marinara tomato sauce, shredded mozzarella, and your favorite toppings. Assemble it at home and bake for about 20 minutes at 375°F, or until the crust is golden and the cheese hot and bubbly.
Easier still, use English muffins as the base for individual
English muffin pizza.
And, remember Valentine's Day is just around the corner if you want to make a homemade heart-shaped pizza for one of the most romantic days of the year.
A slice of pizza history
In the 18th century that Naples, Italy first popularized pizza. But it cam trace its start even earlier to flat breads that were topped with various ingredients and sold as a street food or quick snack.
Recognizing tomato and cheese as the tastiest combo, Naples came to boast more than 50 pizzerias by the early 19th century and doubled the number of pizza shops several decades later. Pizza's popularity soon spread throughout Italy and the rest of Europe.
Pizza finally made its way to the US with the wave of Italian immigrants landing on America's shores at the turn of the century. And, in 1905, Lombardi's was the first pizzeria to open in the United States. Still located in the Little Italy section of Manhattan, Lombardi's is famous for offering smoky-crusted coal oven baked pizza the old-fashioned way.
