The 50th State
does not have a long tradition of growing its own grapes, or fermenting
its own wines, despite early 19th century legends of sailing crews
in search of "wine, women, and song."
The three
main wineries scattered throughout the islands today date back
only to the 70's and 80's, when the mainland craze for establishing
a new generation of vineyards reached its height.
